Sydney, Bean, and the Missing Gloves by Janice E. Collins introduces Sydney, a pup who is afraid when left home alone, especially during thunderstorms. To cope, she buries the evidence of her anxiety, hoping her parents won’t find out. One day, her parents bring home a new puppy, Bean, and Sydney feels both excitement and jealousy. Despite her initial resistance, she reluctantly begins to bond with Bean. When Sydney's mom's precious gloves go missing, Sydney fears she will be blamed, as she’s known to shred things when scared. Bean, determined to help clear her sister's name, sets out on a mission with a cat named Monty, who thinks he knows where the gloves are. Bean ends up trapped in a junkyard, and Sydney, feeling guilty and protective of her sister, leads a rescue mission with the help of neighborhood animals.
In Sydney, Bean, and the Missing Gloves, Janice E. Collins gives readers a heart-warming and delightful tale that perfectly captures the growing bond between two siblings—who happen to be dogs! Collins beautifully addresses in kid-friendly language that fear is not unusual, but that bravery and faith in oneself can come when nurtured by love and family. The illustrations by Art Soluki are really lovely, employing an animation style that combines warm, earthy tones, making each page feel like a living, breathing scene. The interaction between Sydney and her younger sister, Bean, also teaches how even when we think someone has the best of intentions, it is better to get help when it is available from those who we know care about us. Overall, this is a great story that both my youngest reader and I enjoyed. Very highly recommended.
