"Take Cover!" with Miss Poly Loly is a children’s adventure tale written by Karen Avril and illustrated by Michelle Dybing. Mason wakes to a house full of mayhem. His baby brother, Gabriel, is being fed breakfast by his mother. Mason’s sister, Ellie, is complaining that her doll’s arm is broken. Papa is unable to find an ironed shirt. Scatter (the cat) sits on the kitchen bench and watches as each dilemma seems to appear out of nowhere. Mason demands a special breakfast but his mom is too tired to make it. As things get out of hand, Miss Poly Loly arrives with her purple glasses, purple dress and bright red fuzzy hair. One by one, each problem in the household disappears as Mom takes a rest on the futon, leaving her relaxed and able to continue her day stress-free.
The Miss Poly Loly adventure books are a real treat to read and always leave me with a smile on my face. Karen Avril sets the scene beautifully as everything that could possibly go wrong during a typical hectic morning actually does go wrong, causing an exhausted mother to let out an exasperated sigh. When the morning’s frenzy goes one step further, setting the cat, the baby and sister off in a screaming howl, Miss Poly Loly – the children’s aunt – saves the day. On the one hand, I am grateful that the type of insanity and bickering which appears in the Miss Poly Loly adventure books doesn’t occur in my own home but, on the other hand, having somebody always at hand to help pick up the pieces when things look so very out of control sounds like a dream come true. I quite enjoyed "Take Cover!" with Miss Poly Loly and wholeheartedly recommend that it be read by readers aged 5-12, so that the humor conveyed can help to start them on their day, while giving them the incentive to want to keep the home harmonious and carefree.
