Kiera is the keeper of Brook Meadow. She cares for the wildlife and makes sure their natural habitat isn’t disturbed or, worse, destroyed. When the annual Summer Fair sets up in the open meadows, the wildlife is worried about their safety. Sammy the snake and her log home are missing and the animals fear they will be next. But Kiera sets things right and soon Sammy and her log home are back where they belong, Kiera having explained to the people who borrowed the log to weigh down their tent that logs are part of the natural habitat for many creatures in the wild. Relieved that their sanctuary is safe in Kiera’s loving care, the animals venture out to explore the Summer Fair.
Kevin Richardson’s picture book story, Tales From Brook Meadow: The Tale of the Summer Fair, is part of a series that explores the natural habitat in a small reserve called Brook Meadow in Emsworth, southern England. He has woven a story around the animals that inhabit this space, teaching young readers about foxes, hedgehogs, snakes and so many other creatures of the wild. The beautiful, colorful illustrations help carry this story along as the main characters, the animals, play together and learn from one another, while they explore the frightening new experience of the Summer Fair. Like the treasured stories of Gene Stratton-Porter, this book and indeed this series will capture the hearts of young and old alike. Tales From Brook Meadow will not only entertain young readers but hopefully teach them something about wildlife and how important it is to preserve and protect it.
