Soon after Laura Lee is hired as a housekeeper, there is a horrible accident and an employee dies. As the investigation goes on, Laura Lee tries to immerse herself in her new routine but the whisperings from the other employees about the resident ghost, the discovery of spooky closed rooms with empty bookshelves, and a cat who breezes in and out of secret passages are distractions, not to mention the cold and judgmental mistress of the house, Miss Janice. After the initial formality and whispering behind her back, Laura Lee is accepted by the others and invited to the hidden room for their secret meeting. Here, they are usually discussing books, a pastime that Miss Janice is against since she had banned all books from the premises, thus the secrecy, but after the accident, the discussion is rightly animated, and it soon turns into a discussion of murder.
Fun and suspenseful, Tall Tails Secret Book Club by CeeCee James is a true delight. Readers will be easily turning pages as the story of Laura Lee and the other mansion employees unfolds. What I enjoyed most about it is the warm and fun camaraderie of the mansion employees. The ambiance of the spooky dark rooms, the cat who turns up out of nowhere, the mysterious gardener, and the rumors of a ghost, not to mention murder, only adds to readers wanting more. Tall Tails Secret Book Club is a fast and easy read, and readers who love a good mystery will delight in it and will eagerly look forward to more from CeeCee James. I am certainly looking forward to Book 2, Pawsibly Guilty.
