Taquida Falls by B.J. Whillas, the first book of An Emily Hargreaves Series, signals the start of the biblical apocalypse. Emily Hargreaves wakes up for her morning run that ends with Emily on the brink of death. A nine-foot-tall glow of blue light visits Emily in her time of need as she fades into unconsciousness. Emily wakes up in her home, completely unscathed, and is greeted by the Archangel Gabriel who takes a keen interest in Emily. Gabriel, however, as the Messenger of God, has been sent to deliver a grave message to humanity. Will Emily, her family, and her friends be able to stay safe during the start of the apocalypse? Will she find out why she can’t help feeling drawn to this magnificent Archangel?
B.J. Whillas’ Taquida Falls excited me to no end with every chapter. The Archangels are all described in beautiful detail that stretched my imagination in attempting to picture how they look. The Archangels are also written with unique personalities and it was a joy to read the interactions between them. Similarly, Emily and her friends’ banter is amusing and B.J. Whillas captures the intimacy of friends who knew each other throughout high school perfectly. The action and suspense are kept high whether it’s the Archangels fighting against the fallen angels and possessed humans or Emily and friends trudging along on the mission ahead. Taquida Falls is a thrilling entry into a series that I look forward to seeing develop. Fans of the 2010 movie Legion will fall in love with it immediately.
