Tata’s Earrings by Desiree Calderon de Fawaz is the story of Maya who lived in an ordinary town. She lived with her granny, Tata, who always made her smile. Tata was exceptional and could knit with her toes while balancing upside down and she could water the geraniums while she danced. When she went to the market she sang with the canaries and she was even thankful to the worms. When Maya got hurt, only Tata could heal her. One day Maya noticed her granny’s earrings when her headscarf moved a bit. Tata tells her the story of the earrings. Read the book to find out about the magic of Tata’s earrings and the energy it has which has been gathered from many sacred places in the world.

The story is magical like the earrings and is all about love, compassion, strength, courage, and gratitude. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and they give energy to the concept. The beautiful pictures make the characters in the story tangible to young readers and they make the scenes vivid. I loved the story behind the earrings and the message:
‘When you find the light of compassion that lies within,
when you find that love, when you share your light,
you too will be able to create magic in your life...
for yourself and everyone around.
The secret lies within your heart.’

The story is colorful like the illustrations and the concept is beautiful; how the earrings were magical due to Maya’s grandfather’s act of compassion and kindheartedness, and his acceptance of all religion and cultures. It is a good bedtime storybook and is perfect for classroom storytelling sessions to help children understand gratitude, kindness, compassion, strength, courage, and love.
