Tavey’s First Hunt by Daniel Boyd is a must-read for a child's growing library! Tavey is an eight-year-old boy who joins his father on his first hunting trip. What starts as Tavey’s first experience turns out to be so much more. Starting with target shooting practice, Tavey and his father take us along with them on their journey through the woods. Get ready to venture out with Tavey and his dad.
Tavey’s First Hunt by Daniel Boyd is an informative read that will be enjoyed by fathers and sons. Boyd takes note to cover the legal hunting age for minors as well as the hunting laws regarding animals. Each chapter is accompanied by illustrations courtesy of Hector Mexia, which allows us to peek in on Tavey’s adventure. This is a quick read which is set at a moderate pace, giving you plenty of time to answer any burning questions the kids might have. I loved getting to see Tavey put his hunting skills to use by leading the way back home. Aside from the topic of hunting, I loved the overall message. One takeaway for me was to always take a little time out of the day to live in the moment and to snap mental images instead of hiding behind our phone screens. I am a hiker and not a hunter but I can recommend this story.
