“Why bother? Why not just enjoy life as it is? In a hundred years, I’ll be dead, and all that struggle and pain, and whatever else it took to make it big, would have gotten me exactly as deep into the ground as everyone else my age.” For Gary Gray, the young protagonist in Scott Nagele's novel Temp: Life In The Stagnant Lane, the rat race is not very appealing, probably because he is not a rodent. Gary is a good-natured fellow who has not figured out what he wants out of life, except Gwen, his more established and common-sense girlfriend. From lousy days caused by having his shopping cart snatched at the market to losing his temporary jobs over being too competent, Gary navigates through an existence that makes little sense. Ultimately, he discovers that it is not the destination that counts; it is the journey through a jungle of incompetence and complacency called life.
Humorous and delightfully bizarre, Temp by Scott Nagele is a relatable tale that will make you smile. The plot focuses on a young man attempting to figure out what he wants to do with his life as he negotiates through the obstacles of pettiness and his mind. Themes of love, maturity, and spiritual growth are part of the package and expertly woven into the story with wit and hilarity. At the same time, the character development is top-notch and portrayed by a cast of screw-balls, misfits, and petty tyrants who don't have a clue. A steady and engaging pace combined with original and clever storytelling makes Temp a novel that will please fans of many genres, and I was sad to see it end. For anyone feeling that they need a laugh without having their intelligence insulted, Temp is a must-read that reminds us to live life to the fullest and never lose hope.
