In That Murder Feeling by Neve Maslakovic, though Rodrick works as a PI in his small town, he isn’t like other detectives. He can see emotions. While most people see emotions as facial expressions, he sees auras blossoming around a person in waves similar to living gardens, where he encounters everything from strange creatures to bizarre weather. This ability lets him see what others can't, which helps him when he’s pulled into the middle of a murder investigation. When the richest man in town is found dead following a blizzard, Clementine Baker is labeled the number one suspect for his murder. Rodrick knows his childhood friend is innocent, but to prove it, he must face the unsettling reality found in the soul garden of a killer. But will his own feelings get in the way of catching a killer?

The concept of emotions is explored uniquely. The writing makes the world feel grounded and real despite its unique properties, while not overpowering the mystery. The 1980s backdrop adds a fun historical quirkiness to the whodunit that fans of genre-bending will adore. Neve Maslakovic takes the genre and twists it into something original, offering something new for mystery lovers. The descriptions of what Rodrick sees are stunning and add a richness to the mystery that goes beyond the murder. This adds a magical realism element to the story and gives an interesting beauty to the writing. The emotional concept also allows you to connect to various characters through how Rodrick connects to them. The case has an emotional weight to it, which is seen through the sweet dynamic between him and his childhood friend. This adds a human element that balances the unique magical elements, such as the creatures seen in the soul garden. That Murder Feeling blends murder, emotions, and whodunit in a unique, original, and charming mystery.
