That The Dead May Rest by Karen A. Wyle follows Millie, a kind spirit, and Rosie, a human medium who can communicate with spirits in the afterlife. Millie is enjoying her peaceful new life. She helps others understand that they are dead and makes them feel safe. Over time, things begin to change; there is disturbing news that people who have already died are coming back to life and killing humans. This terrifies Millie, especially as someone who comes to the afterlife accuses her of killing him in the human world. As reports of zombies causing problems in the human world increase, Millie feels the need to help, even though she is a spirit. She teams up with Sofia, Emma, Rosie, and other humans and spirits to find a way to stop these zombies from causing further damage. They make plans to return their bodies to the grave, receiving assistance from ravens and crows.
This unique book caught my attention. It offers a fresh view on zombie stories, links the real world with life after death, and has strong female characters as protagonists, making it more interesting. The writing style is calm and thoughtful. Despite the dark themes, it is not full of blood or gore; instead, the author uses emotions and well-developed characters to build tension and mystery. I found it a bit funny at first when the characters were building a new life and dealing with unfinished problems in their afterlife. I wondered what life after death really looks like. The idea of the ravens and crows gave the book a more fantastical look. The secondary characters also played great roles and helped in making the plot more plausible. That The Dead May Rest by Karen A. Wyle covers themes of guilt, death, healing, friendship, love, and doing what is right. I recommend it to readers who love books about spirits and humans working together to solve big problems.
