Since Juuji and his family arrived safely on Mars, he has made their welfare his priority. Chief among them is finding a way to get the Caterpillar they all call the Bus to transition into a butterfly. His previous attempts have failed, and as time passes, the other members of his small unit are gradually losing hope that he will eventually find a solution to their problems. When his latest attempt starts showing some promise, the young man believes this time may not be business as usual. What Juuji is unaware of is that others also want what he's seeking and are willing to harm him and his family to obtain it. Can Juuji keep Asim the baby, Bus the Caterpillar, and Lim and Nim, the two-headed dog, safe from this emerging threat? Only time will tell in Martin Ntonjira's The Adventures of Juuji and the Mutants!

Martin Ntonjira's The Adventures of Juuji and the Mutants! is a three-part picture book for young readers. The author uses a simple origin story that youngsters can follow to explain why people had to leave Earth for a future on Mars. The storytelling style focuses on detailed world-building and entertaining dialogue, resulting in a curious assortment of human-animal hybrids, complemented by feisty episodes between Juuji and his family as they decide on a plan of action. Readers will appreciate Juuji's introspection as he considers the consequences of his family members achieving their heart's desires, especially Asim. The vivid images will resonate with young readers, helping them connect to the author's remarkably colorful imagination. I enjoyed this fascinating story and recommend it to both young and older readers.
