The Adventures of Princess Simi: Snake Maiden Story is a children’s book written by Lakshmi Narayani and illustrated by Aswathy KP. Eight-year-old Princess Simi is the daughter of King Himana and Queen Sila – rulers of the Himasimi Kingdom. Simi and her cousin, Eddie, are very excited about the day’s activities at the royal picnic. During the picnic, Simi and Eddie decide to race each other into the forest, where they are quickly separated. On hearing the voice of her father’s exiled brother, Uncle Horra, from inside a cave, Simi goes to investigate. Without knowing the truth behind Uncle Horra’s disappearance, Simi innocently hands her wand to her uncle, who curses Simi to punish his brother, but is interrupted by Simi’s pet parrot, who steals the book of black magic while he is chanting, and flies away with it. Simi is destined to transform into a half-snake at sunset each night before reverting to normal at sunrise. Because her parents had lied to her, Simi has become the unwilling victim of her uncle’s evil and has to now try to find a way to reverse the curse before it completely consumes her.
Lakshmi Narayani has penned an intricate tale of evil and deception, and the repercussions of being dishonest when bad things happen. It's a fable which shows the ramifications of not being honest, especially when it comes to people that a child trusts so implicitly. I enjoy the innocence of Simi and Eddie, as well as Eddie’s immediate heartbreak for his cousin and his willingness to try to help her. A child’s most exciting annual event fast becomes an event that leaves the child scarred by a trusted family member and hurt by her parents’ lies. The saddest part is that Simi chooses to spare them the pain of knowing what her uncle had done to her in the woods, which shows love and loyalty on Simi’s part, regardless of the obstacles that she faces. The Adventures of Princess Simi: Snake Maiden Story is thought-provoking and is a must-read for children and their parents alike, showing the reason that honesty is the best policy.
