The Altar of My Fate is a work of fiction in the epic fantasy and adventure subgenres and serves as the opening installment of the Rosteval Saga series. It is aimed at mature readers and was penned by author Michael R. Schultheiss. The book follows the warrior Rosteval as he leads his war band into the desert in search of glory but instead finds a slave named Ghaitta and an artifact with a terrible power that paints a target on his back. This threatens to overwhelm and destroy his forces before their legend has a chance to begin.
Taking the familiar trappings of the fantasy genre and putting a unique interpretation on the well-known elements within gives this first story in the Rosteval Saga an exciting and refreshing signature feel right from the first page. Author Michael R. Schultheiss has a gift for descriptive writing that compels readers to dive headfirst into this exciting and dynamic world of his creation, a world of danger and secrets that creates a perfect backdrop for a compelling story about a warrior determined to leave his mark on the world. I particularly enjoyed the developing dynamic between Rosteval and Ghaitta, which felt like a natural relationship that moved forward at just the right pace to complement the action without overshadowing the greater themes of the story. I’m excited to read future installments to see what direction the characters go in as new and old threats alike undoubtedly appear. Overall, The Altar of My Fate is an exciting epic tale, and I recommend this book to all readers.
