The Amazing Adventures of 4¢ Ned by Benjamin Laskin is the seventh book in the Coinworld Series, which has followed the story of Ned Nickle, a five-cent coin that has been erroneously stamped as a four-cent nickel. He makes up one of The Six, a group of coins who are at war for their safety and to defend themselves against an eternity of loneliness at the hands of (and in the isolated collections of) rare coin collectors and those willing to trade the most unusual in Coinworld. Ned and co. are trying to solve the mystery of Ned's mentor Chief Iron Tail, who disappeared mysteriously, and the whole unknown universe of loose change is vulnerable to exposure and betrayal in this, the penultimate installment of Coinworld.
Benjamin Laskin has written a wonderfully creative series with Coinworld, and book seven in The Amazing Adventures of 4¢ Ned. Ned Nickle was never meant to be a hero (or even worth his full weight in copper), but he has grown with the rest of the Coinworld crew into a worthy protagonist. The story is absolutely hilarious and Laskin does an excellent job in making a wholly original series about something most in the “real world” don't even consider. The writing is tight, the characters are engaging, and there is enough action to drive readers through to the series finale—the eighth and last book—with all of the panache of an adventure that one would never expect to come from the unlikely champions of metal currency. Highly recommended.
