The Assassin's Heart by Chuck Morgan follows Delia Cahill, a lawyer and highly skilled assassin assigned by the Organization to kill Alexander Thorne, a reclusive tech billionaire whose app, Nexus, is believed to have the power to destabilize global governments. Delia infiltrates Thorne's estate, where she learns he might not really be the dangerous guy she was led to believe. Instead, it's highly probable that his motivations could align more with global peace. Delia starts questioning her mission and the Organization's true intentions. Despite pressure to complete the assignment and given a firm 48-hour deadline, Delia must decide whether to protect Thorne, or protect herself. In addition to the Organization’s pursuit, a skeleton from Delia's past re-emerges and throws a spanner in the works. Delia's actions, whichever path she takes, will reshape the geopolitical landscape, and the consequences of her decisions, including the toll on her own heart, are inescapable.
“The Organization demanded absolute loyalty, unquestioning obedience. But a part of Delia, a fragile ember of her former self, screamed against the cold, logic of their mission.” Chuck Morgan’s The Assassins’ Heart is one of those reads where the hook is so sharp, there's no going anywhere else once you've started reading. The action is immediate, but Morgan uses the restraint of a seasoned writer when it comes to Delia’s backstory, which harnesses itself to a particularly traumatic childhood event. Delia herself is a fascinating anti-hero, constantly pulled in different directions by the forces around her. Her relationship with Elena, filled with betrayal and lingering feelings, is by far the most intriguing dynamic, surpassing her interactions with either Thorne or her husband, David. Rather than relying solely on the mission’s stakes, Morgan leans into the fresh perspective on the world of femme assassins, and, like the Red Sparrow trilogy by Jason Matthews, this well-rounded and intense read will be adored by those who enjoy spycraft that goes above and beyond. Very highly recommended.
