The Bird Caper by Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson is a middle-grade reader for 4th to 6th graders who love a good whodunit with a bit of mischief and a lot of heart. The story centers around ten-year-old Brandon, whose world is turned upside down when his parents announce they're selling their home. The prospect of leaving his beloved neighborhood and friends is daunting. Still, it gets even more complicated when his clever pet crow, Ralph, becomes entangled in bizarre bird-related incidents. As Ralph turns into the prime suspect, Brandon realizes he must act fast to clear his feathered friend's name and prevent losing more than just his home—his friendship with his best buddy, Josh, is also on the line.

What makes The Bird Caper such a fun read is the delightful mix of suspense and whimsy. Brandon's race against time to solve the mystery introduces a cast of quirky characters, from the obnoxious B.B. Boy bullies to the unexpected role of ladybugs in a plot twist that will surely surprise readers. Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson have done an excellent job of crafting a story that balances adventure and lightheartedness with underlying themes of friendship, loyalty, and problem-solving. Brandon’s determination and creativity in the face of adversity make him a likable and inspiring protagonist for kids. This book is perfect for the classroom because it’s lively, entertaining, and carries a positive message. There’s also a bonus teacher reading resources that offer some excellent “think” skills.

The Bird Caper is a children's adventure novel by Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson. Brandon Woodberry is a happy young boy who loves anything and everything to do with nature and animals. Ten-year-old Brandon already has a rescued pet crow named Ralph and a pigeon coop in his house. But when his parents declare they are moving, Brandon can't believe he will be allowed to bring his bird coop and Ralph to their new home. Meanwhile, he fights with his best friend Josh after Ralph flies off with Josh's computer chips. But a party brings the two friends closer together once again. Now, Brandon's family must adapt to their new neighborhood where the BB boys accuse Ralph of stealing people's objects. Can Brandon prove them wrong? Will he make new friends?

Preteen readers who love fun-filled adventure tales will have a blast with The Bird Caper. Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson's wholesome story follows the adventures of a young boy and his pet bird as they navigate friends, family, and new surroundings. Brandon and Ralph's loving relationship is the beating heart of the tale. I also immensely enjoyed Brandon and Josh's friendship. Most of the characters are kids with very different personalities. Young readers will certainly be able to relate to Brandon and his experiences. Brandon's love and care for Ralph and even the pigeons make him very likable as a protagonist. Full of humor, heart, and charm, this is the perfect adventure book for children. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think you will too!

The Bird Caper by Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson is a delightful story about a boy named Brandon and his pet crow, Ralph. Ralph is his best friend, the one he can tell everything and who understands him. When Brandon and his family are set to move away from the only home he has known for 10 years, Brandon can confide in Ralph about all the sadness and anger he feels. His family does not always understand him, but Ralph does. Luckily the move is only across town and he won’t have to change schools. But not long after moving into their new home, Brandon learns that the BB group, a group of bullies, lives in the neighborhood. And when the neighborhood’s residents start to blame a crow for stealing things, Brandon must prove Ralph’s innocence as soon as possible.

The Bird Caper by Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson is exceptionally well written for young readers between the ages of 8 and 12. The book is filled with lessons taught through adventures and interesting happenings. It will help any child struggling with bullies and moving from a place they know, and they will enjoy reading about it. I was amazed when I learned that the book was written by two different authors. They collaborated so perfectly that you cannot tell that two different people wrote it. The book also has a section of questions at the end which will help a young reader think deeply about the story they just read. It is an important skill that people should learn from a young age. I think The Bird Caper is a great book and recommend it to any young reader.
