The Birthday Surprise, written and illustrated by K. W. Tey, is the story of a little boy who likes to put a box on his head, which is why everyone calls him Little Box. Today, Little Box is full of excitement and energy because it is his sixth birthday. His mom has a lot of fun things Little Box will love planned for the birthday party, like animals and an entertainer. Mom gets a phone call and has to go help someone who has broken down. She explains to Little Box what is going on and that she is expecting the entertainer to be there soon and he can go ahead and let him in. What is the entertainer dressed like? Will Mom be back before the party is supposed to begin?

The Birthday Surprise by K. W. Tey is part of The Little Box Adventure Series. This story has a well-developed plot that will keep a child entertained as Little Box and the visitor slip and slide around the house. I love how Little Box questions whether or not he should open the door for a stranger, even though his mom gave him permission to do so. The illustrations are also by Tey and tell the story through adorable pictures that will hold a child’s attention. I love how Tey used easy to read words and explained common metaphors so that even young children can learn new terms and phrases. I recommend The Birthday Surprise to anyone who has children, especially if they are in the early stages of learning to read.
