The Bling Bling Bird is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Linda M. Gentry. Bling Bling Bird was just an ordinary bird but she really felt that she was much more than that. She loved the colorful bow that she wore on top of her head, but that bit of ornamentation was just not enough. It was on a snowy winter’s day that Bling Bling Bird got the idea of sparkling and shining brightly. You see, she loved the way the snow sparkled in the sunlight. It was so bright that she had to scrunch her eyes up from the glare. How could she shine and sparkle like that? She experimented with covering her feathers with a coating of snow, but it was much too cold and made her shiver. There had to be a better idea. She wanted to be different than the other birds, to stand out, to make a statement. Then she noticed a sparkle on the ground as she was flying overhead. Looking more closely, she realized it was a bright and shiny necklace. No one seemed to be looking for it, so Bling Bling Bird decided she would see what magical transformation that shiny necklace could bring for her.

Linda M. Gentry’s children’s picture book, The Bling Bling Bird, is a illuminating and humorous fable about a bird who wanted to sparkle and shine. I loved the interactions between the bedazzled young bird and the wiser Grannybird, and did indeed wonder how Bling Bling Bird was going to fare with all that bling on her body. Gentry’s illustrations are boldly and brightly colored and make the Bling Bling Bird come to life in all her bejeweled brilliance. Gentry’s verses are simple and catchy, and the vocabulary is geared towards new readers to try on their own as well as for story time. Gentry also gives caregivers plenty of opportunities to pause the reading and have kids guess what will happen next. The Bling Bling Bird is highly recommended.
