The Blue Medallion by Kate Lutter is book two in The Wild Island Series. Lily Pattenson, a half-human-half revenant, conceals her identity as a descendant of the Lost Colony of Roanoke known to survive as immortals on Wild Point Island. Accused of wrongdoing, she must return to the island to prove her father's innocence and restore her reputation. Aligning with Nicholas Johnson, the island's powerful High Councilor, she can gain access to the time portal in the obelisk to obtain evidence. However, to do so, she must surrender her cherished blue medallion, which traps her on the island indefinitely. Nicholas seeks the medallion to defeat the Council and restore justice after ruling the island for 400 years.

I've been on a Roanoke history kick for about a year and was looking for something that was a little more creative to fill the void. The Blue Medallion by Kate Lutter fits the bill perfectly. It's only based on the Lost Colony but, frankly, this was a “you had me at Roanoke” situation. I love the backstory and the seamless way Lutter transitions new readers in comfortably. Revenants will die off on the island but, having 400 years to perfect a way to bend that, portals, alliances, technology, and centuries of wisdom all commingle nicely. Lily mucked up big time previously but it's hard not to feel sorry for her when she gets blind-sided by a contract that shows how a powerful man's view of a woman's worth hasn't changed much since 1590. Later Lutter provides a twist that changes our perspective somewhat. Between strong character development, plot twists, emotional depth, immersive world-building, and fantasy elements, the exploration of themes such as family and loyalty that transcend fantasy make Lutter's work relatable and a joy to read.

I didn't read the first book, but as the author suggested, it can hold its own as a stand-alone. I learned what a remnant is! Lily was a strong, well-developed character. Her mission is defined, and along the way there are multiple barriers to the end game. And some romance is the icing on the cake! Great read!

As unique as a revenant, The Blue Medallion will draw you into the fantasy world of Wild Point Island where revenants have lived for over 400 years. Lily, the heroine of this story, is a lawyer on the mainland of North Carolina, having been banished from Wild Point Island with her mother and sister when she was young. She is half human, half revenant and intended to live the human life away from the island. But she is summoned to Wild Point Island to represent an alleged murderer, and can’t refuse the demand of the High Councilor.
Ms. Lutter flawlessly weaves a story of adventure, fantasy and romance into this well-plotted book, where family secrets, loyalties, and mysteries abound.

Kate Forest

This story combines a romance with a twisty plot. In order to clear her father from crimes he didn't commit, she must do the things that endanger her the most. She has to trust Nicholas, who might not have her best interests at heart. She's sucked back into the life she escaped. The main characters are relatable and the world building is excellent. You'll be transported to a different place and time, that's not far from the real life.
