The Brain by Jeff S. Johnson tells the remarkable story of software executive and accident victim Tom Mohr. Where most people's lives end, the most amazing part of Tom's life begins. For ten years from his legal death he is in a comatose state, trapped in a mysterious lab unsanctioned by any federal agency. And then he wakes up as a brain on a quest back to the love of his life. His first step is to help his captors develop technology that will make him mobile once again. His second step is to find his wife Stacy, who is now a wealthy recluse with a checkered past.
In The Brain, Jeff S. Johnson revisits the classic tale of the Frankenstein monster and modernizes it with highly developed techniques. While faithful to the science fiction genre, Johnson never forgets that Tom Mohr is a human with human emotions and the human need for freedom, intellectual stimulation, and love. His writing, while technical, maintains an fascinating thread of suspense, and Tom and Stacy Mohr are engaging, both in how they deal with their losses and in how people with such different backgrounds come together to fall in love. The backstories of the secondary characters are equally intriguing.
If you are looking for a short science fiction read that is long on entertainment value, The Brain is a perfect fit. Be ready to expand your knowledge of science, computer technology, and high finance while you enjoy Tom Mohr's horrific and sometimes heartbreaking final journey as a scientific anomaly.
