I love butterflies, don’t you? I love to watch them flit around the flowers in my garden. I hadn’t realized there was a reason for their dancing around, hovering above fields of pollinator flowers like lavender. In Julianne Dumas’s The Butterfly Dance at Lavender Field, all the animals in the wooded area know what time of year it is because it’s that special day when the butterflies come from far and near to do a little dance and put on a show for everyone to watch. “The butterflies fly free/ filling the sky with their colorful dance.” The foxes, deer, and many other animals love to watch the butterflies do their thing, soaring and swooping, filling the fields of lavender and the sky above with a startling maze of colors. It is a sight to behold.
Julianne Dumas’s picture book, The Butterfly Dance at Lavender Field, is a delightful story that teaches young readers about the beauty of butterflies and the reasons for their annual dancing ritual. Told partially in rhyming verse, the author uses simple language so young readers can easily follow along. Including animals in the story builds a connection between young readers and the audience watching this marvelous event. The images by Blueberry Illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, adding another dimension to the story. At the end of the book are some interesting facts about butterflies, including what plants attract them. An enjoyable and educational story that will inspire readers of all ages to observe and appreciate these delicate creatures.
