The Caregiver's Game: Unraveling Financial Deceit in the Shadows of Dementia by Charles E. Wallace Jr. is a horrifying true story. Joell Fleming lost everything to dementia. At 78 years old, she had always been a strong woman, until in 2013, dementia started to creep in. Her children lived too far away, so a caregiver, Esmarelda Gomez, started looking after her. Over the months, she gradually took more control of Joell's life, pushing her family away, but it wasn't until she died in 2022 that what Gomez was doing came to light. A lot of Joell's money was gone, her kids were no longer medical POAs, and Gomez had gotten herself into Joell's will. She was set to inherit $300,000, but a forensic psychiatrist uncovered what really happened. It wasn't the first time Gomez had done this. This terrifying story lays bare the truth about the ease with which a predator gained full access to one woman's life and how she was allowed to carry on. It lays bare the awful truth about elder abuse.

The Caregiver's Game by Charles E. Wallace Jr. is a real eye-opener. Not only does it tell the terrible story of how one woman preyed on countless seniors, but it also provides readers with the information they need to spot elder abuse, notably financial abuse, and what to do. There are some truly awful people in the world, just looking for their next opportunity to exploit someone, and who better than an older person with dementia? As someone with a parent who has dementia, I know firsthand the struggle it is to find a trustworthy caregiver. This story really does tell it like it is when that caregiver is unscrupulous and takes over, and what it can do to a family. If you're in the position of having to find a caregiver for a member of your family or have already hired one, read this book. It will tell you all you need to know and what to look out for if you suspect abuse of any kind. It is hard-hitting, but it has to be to expose the nature of the predators who prey on the vulnerable. It's one book you'll never forget.
