The Chaos by Sergio Gomez is a great novel. I am going to give you my impressions without giving away any spoilers, so you may not appreciate how good it is, but take my word for it, The Chaos is awesome. Now granted, this is a genre I love, post-apocalyptic fiction. There are a lot of different styles of this kind of fiction, but not everyone can pull it off in a manner that puts you there in that world of loss and survival. Sergio Gomez can and he compels you to keep turning pages because you care so much about this world and these people; after all, they are just like you and me.
There is a horror element in The Chaos that reminded me a lot of the writing of Stephen King. Weirdness is interwoven with everyday life in a braid so tight and realistic that you look out your window to make sure the world hasn't changed while you were reading. There are a lot of characters to root for in The Chaos. There are even more to pity and feel sorry for. My favorites were Alexandro and Charlie, a father-son team making their way through a world too horrible to believe and accept. It was heart wrenching to watch the father trying to protect his son, not just from the physical danger, but also from the horror and inhumanity of their new world. This is a great book on so many levels, but most of all, it is very well written.
