The Clean Green Dragon by Rebecca Bielawski is a delightful picture book story about a dragon who helps some not-very-bright creatures see the error of their sea-polluting ways. A dragon, with solar-paneled wings, lives a lazy life on a volcanic island blowing cheery, animal-shaped clouds into the sky. Nearby lives a bunch of quirky squirrels who tell jokes and clean the dragon’s wings. Things change, however, when plastic pollution starts washing up on the island. The dragon becomes ill from sipping the dirty sea and his fluffy nostril-blown clouds turn muddy. The squirrels kick the dragon into action and he flies off in search of the rubbish source. He comes across another island with creatures that look suspiciously human and who are the ignorant source of the trash. Through some tail-tapping, coconut-bashing means, the dragon helps the creatures see the error of their ways, and the dragon is able to return to his clean and happy life.

In The Clean Green Dragon, Rebecca Bielawski combines humor, interesting characters, and lovely illustrations that will appeal to and entertain young children. More than that, the author addresses the all-important subjects of climate change, plastic pollution of the seas, human ignorance and inaction, awareness, and the sensible solution to use reusable containers in place of throw-away ones. The educational message in the story is easily woven into the fun and action, making it both enjoyable and empowering. I especially liked the humorous digs, like the angry squirrels kicking the dragon’s butt, and the clever ways in which the subject of reusable energy is introduced to a young audience.
