The Coal Room by Brenda Lyne is a must-read for any lover of the paranormal and mystery genres. The Coal Room tells the story of Delaney Black, whose life is in shambles. Her husband threw her out of the house because he had an affair with his much younger paralegal. She is about to be served with divorce papers and has found out her father has died, meaning she will have to return to Everwind, a place she wanted to avoid for the rest of her life. But duty calls, and she is on the next train to Everwind. Here she meets Glade, a man who acts and dresses like he just came out of the 1950s. When Glade starts helping her to clean out her father’s home, she learns the truth: Glade is a ghost that only she can see. And he can’t rest until the truth of his death is revealed.

The Coal Room by Brenda Lyne is a great book for any mystery lover; it does not end the way you expect. The story is told from Delaney's viewpoint, giving you a more in-depth perspective on the events around her. The author brought to mind through this story that sometimes the worst times in your life can be the best times in the making. It’s a mystery well worth reading. This book has everything: ghosts, bad guys, and handsome good guys, everything needed to make a book stand out. I love it when a book has a good twist, and The Coal Room has a twist you will never expect. When it ended, it was bittersweet to me. I was happy the mystery was solved, but I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the characters. All I can say is, “What a great book!”

Brenda Lyne’s The Coal Room shows Delaney Black’s life at a total dead end. Trapped in a marriage that has stripped her of her confidence and her cash, she is shocked when her husband finally makes their split legal. A sudden inheritance in Everwind, North Dakota, seems like her only way out, even if it means returning to a childhood she’d rather forget. Once she arrives, she encounters Glade Whitlock, a mysterious man who happened to be around just as she started uncovering her father’s secret research. It turns out her dad wasn't just drinking his life away; he was obsessed with a cold case that reached back into the 1950s. Delaney finds herself caught between a husband with his own dangerous agenda and a spirit from the past with a family tie she never saw coming. Will she be able to expose the truth before it's buried again?

The Coal Room by Brenda Lyne is an excellent genre-blender that kept me guessing about what was real and what was a memory from the past. The author does a very good job of exploring how the past can haunt the present. Lyne has a real talent for building tension, particularly regarding the hidden threats Delaney faces in her own hometown. I thought Glade's character was a brilliant addition to this powerful story. He brings a sense of wonder and tragedy to a story that could have just been a standard domestic thriller. The storytelling is very engaging and hits all the right emotional notes while still keeping the suspense going. It’s a very satisfying look at how long-buried secrets can rot a family from the inside out if they aren't finally brought into the light. This book is a must-read for fans of supernatural mysteries or anyone who loves a protagonist who has to find their own spine after life throws them several unforeseen curveballs.

The Coal Room by Brenda Lyne follows Delaney Black, a high-end sales associate in Minneapolis, whose life starts falling apart when her husband, Cam, suddenly serves her with divorce papers. Broke, emotionally drained, and left with almost nothing, Delaney is hit with another shock after learning that her estranged father, Frank, has died in her bleak hometown of Everwind, North Dakota. With nowhere else to go, she returns home and begins clearing out her father’s neglected house. During this time, she meets a kind but mysterious young man named Glade. Things take a strange turn when her former boyfriend, Brandon, now a local police officer, reveals that Glade’s home has actually been abandoned for seventy years. As Delaney spends more time in Everwind, Glade’s ghost slowly leads her to a disturbing family secret tied to her grandfather, Benson Marks, and an old murder that was buried for decades. The experience pushes Delaney to finally break away from her husband’s narcissistic control and rediscover her own sense of self.

The Coal Room by Brenda Lyne is a haunting and emotional story that mixes a chilling mystery with a very personal journey of healing and self-worth. The title works perfectly because the coal room becomes both a real place tied to the story’s darkest moment and a symbol of the painful secrets hidden inside a family for generations. Lyne creates a strong sense of place with Everwind. She makes the dusty, windswept town of Everwind feel like a character on its own. This also mirrors Delaney’s initial feelings of stagnation and decay. The character development as the story moves on is a major highlight. Watching Delaney transform from a submissive wife into a woman who stands up to her husband is incredibly satisfying. The ghostly helper trope is handled with a fresh, conversational charm. This book is a must-read for fans of character-driven mysteries, healing journeys, and quiet supernatural fiction. Fans of small-town mysteries and psychological dramas like those by Gillian Flynn will love it. It delivers a resonant message about breaking cycles of abuse. It keeps the reader hooked with a genuinely spooky mystery.
