The Cottage by Jo A. Hiestand is a wonderful mystery story. Michael McLaren, a former police detective, is helping Melanie move home. But once a police detective, always a police detective. A neighbor needs McLaren to look into who murdered her parents, but McLaren doesn’t want to leave Melanie to move on her own. Enter Jamie, his best friend, who takes over and leaves McLaren to his investigations. But if something can go wrong, it will, and one mistake after another leaves McLaren wondering if he’s made the right decision, especially when Jamie's and Melanie’s lives are under threat, too. Can McLaren find the truth about the murders in time, or will all three become collateral damage?
The Cottage by Jo A. Hiestand is one of the most thrilling mysteries you will read this year. This is not your ordinary mystery story. It tells of a cold case, but there is much more to the story. Layer upon layer of British culture builds this story, with the descriptive prose allowing you to experience it for yourself. The characters are deep and complex, and the plot is just twisty enough to grab your attention and keep you guessing but not so much that you become lost. This book is part of the McLaren mysteries series, and although I always recommend reading a series to get a real feel for the characters, I found this one easy to read as a standalone. This is the perfect mixture of cold case whodunit, fantasy, and romance; it's an easy read with plenty of suspense. This is one book where you’ll desperately want to know the ending, but, at the same time, you won’t want it to end.
