Martina Boone’s The Crown of Moonlight is a secondary-world romantic fantasy with a historical Highland setting, following Flora, a nineteen-year-old noblewoman protecting Dunhaelic as immortal rulers fight for Alba Scoria’s throne. Flora’s father and brothers are dead, leaving her responsible for the clan even though Everfolk law bars women from becoming Chief. She carries a dangerous secret in the native magic outlawed centuries earlier by the immortal Sun King. In the Sacred Wood near Dunhaelic, Flora finds two dead Riders, immortal warriors serving the prince trying to reclaim the throne from Raven Queen Vheara. A third Rider named Chyr is barely alive. Helping him could bring Vheara’s soldiers to her people, yet his death on clan land could bring punishment from his own side. With both factions closing around the Highlands, Flora must protect Dunhaelic while deciding what Chyr’s arrival means for her clan.
Martina Boone’s The Crown of Moonlight is incredible romantic fantasy, and the author has fleshed out Alba Scoria into a world that feels ancient and wonderfully atmospheric. Flora is fiercely compassionate, coaxing an exhausted mare to drink from her cupped hands, and helping the wounded even when doing so places demands on her own strength. I love Chyr, the immortal warrior traveling beside her, whose dry wit brings warmth to their conversations and whose rare smiles soften his warrior exterior. The magical world building is excellent and much of it comes through creatures existing just beyond ordinary human sight. For example, Shadehounds appear as silent guardians, while Hallow Keepers linger around sacred places unseen by most mortals. Still, it’s the author’s near cinematic descriptions of landscapes that steal the scenes, from tea-dark water beneath the willows along Loch Seil and mist dimming distant watch-fires, to Loch Moadar, where kelp tangles across the flats and the ruined walls of Castle Tchirum rise from the island like a broken fist. Beautifully written and imaginative, readers who enjoy Highland fantasy with immortal warriors will adore this.
