The Cult Shadow is a work of science fiction intended for the mature adult audience owing to the use of explicit language throughout, as well as scenes of graphic violence and some sexual content. The novel forms the first part of the Gods of the Void saga and was penned by author Peter Lamb. Our protagonist is Ricardo Olivera, a stifled soul trapped in the desert of Trocken. Forced to bow under the fist of oppression, Ricardo dreams of traveling the stars, and when fate intervenes and puts him in the path of some of the planet’s most elite figures, he may just get his wish granted.
Author Peter Lamb has crafted a mature, exciting, and politically charged work of science fiction that will certainly please fans of the hardcore mechanics of the genre. The author creates a somber and oppressive mood with attention to fine detail, atmospheric descriptive language, and character responses. One of the features which I found particularly impressive about this piece was the amalgamation of the top-down and bottom-up view of worldbuilding, which pays special attention to individual characters and their personal struggles, but also securely fits them into a wider political and ideological structure and shows us how the bigger picture works too. It takes an impressive mind to create these kinds of structures, and a talented writer to convey them to us in a way that is so enjoyable. What results is a highly engrossing sci-fi action drama that is sure to keep readers turning pages from cover to cover. I’d highly recommend The Cult Shadow to enthusiasts of any and all those subgenres.
