In The Curious Cat with Eight Lives and One to Die On by Timothy Neff Gocke, Tucker Glock happily lives with his four sons and his wife, Bonnie. While walking his dogs, he stumbles across an odd scene: Ben, the son of the president of the college where Tucker works, loads bags into white vans and kisses a woman who is not his young wife. After a tip from a gossiping neighbor and over two hours, Tucker watches Ben make over a dozen short trips in and out of the neighborhood where they live. He knows he should tell his family, but the time never seems right, and he wants to protect them. The situation worsens as Tucker and his dogs are attacked, but, instead of backing off, his curiosity pushes him further until he hatches a clever scheme to save his community from what he suspects is drug-related activity.

Timothy Neff Gocke tells the story as if he has actually lived it. From the descriptions of the Glock family and the similarity between their names to the details around weather-related events, parties, and their family's daily life, it feels as though Gocke is relaying an experience instead of crafting a fictional tale. Readers will keep turning the pages as they become invested in Tucker's life and the increasing suspense with Ben. The protagonist skillfully balances his job and family duties while expertly investigating the crime in his area. Tucker is seemingly a dog person, but his sleuthing is much like a cat prowling in concealed places as it counts down its number of lives. Readers who enjoy everyday sleuths and realistic mysteries will enjoy The Curious Cat with Eight Lives.
