The Dance of Vipers by A.K. Nairn transports readers to the shadowy court politics of 1517 Scotland, a land where peace is a performance and treachery simmers beneath every alliance. French diplomat Antoine de Lissieu, who is no stranger to the games of European power, finds himself dispatched to the Scottish Marches to oversee the detainment of a captured bandit. But what seems like a mundane mission quickly spirals into a perilous tangle of double-crosses, covert ambitions, and corpses that begin to pile up with unnerving frequency. As he delves deeper into the unraveling loyalties of clans and court, Antoine discovers that the real threats are not lurking on the borders but within the very halls of diplomacy. Navigating a world where one wrong word can mean death, he becomes both hunter and hunted, desperate to discern truth from lies before Scotland’s fragile stability collapses.

Author A.K. Nairn has a talent for suspense and immersion, and that makes this a gripping historical thriller grounded in immersive detail and taut suspense. I was drawn in by the authenticity of the setting—the icy corridors of power, the windswept highlands, and the moral ambiguity of diplomacy in a fractured land. Antoine is a standout lead: principled yet cunning, always one misstep away from ruin. Even as the story thrills readers with its murders and maneuverings, it also contemplates loyalty, justice, and the limits of reason in the face of ambition. Overall, The Dance of Vipers is a masterfully written, high-stakes historical mystery that will satisfy lovers of intrigue, espionage, and rich period drama.
