The Darkness Hunter by Christopher Valen is the sixth novel in the John Santana series featuring Homicide Detective John Santana. The Darkness Hunter is told in two parts, titled Then and Now. Then starts off when Santana is called to investigate the murder of a young Native American girl, which then leads to the death of the case's prime suspect, a death that his partner may have been involved in. Though the investigation and trial are long in the past, by the time Santana is assigned a cold case involving the murder of an environmental engineer, he starts to see connections to the previous case.
Seeking justice for the victims, Santana begins to see just how complicated this case is and how far the darkness reaches. Someone wants to keep the case buried, someone who always seems to be a few steps ahead of Santana. Determined to hunt down the killers before they strike again, Santana must deal with his own demons as well as a conspiracy that threatens not only his life but the life of someone he cares about.
Though The Darkness Hunter is the sixth book in the series, I didn't feel lost at all. Valen gives the reader just enough information about Santana to keep us abreast before weaving a taut story full of mystery and tension. And while there are a lot of names to remember, the core players are distinct enough that I wasn't confused. I enjoyed The Darkness Hunter by Christopher Valen; it was a good, well crafted mystery with a pertinent message interwoven into a thrilling plot.
