Christoffer Vuolo Junros’s The Delay follows Nash, a prisoner on Serenith, a lethal blue world where molten glass storms batter a vast forced-labor facility. Once a citizen of Bailot, Serenith’s inhabited sister planet, Nash is imprisoned after officials target her family when her brother, Zhilmo, speaks against a settlement system that has displaced families from their homes. Inside the prison, inmates mine beneath constant surveillance as human Blackcoats and pale protoclone guards enforce the Warden’s rules through collars capable of inflicting pain. When tiny failures begin appearing in the prison’s systems, Nash notices a possible opening. Her former acquaintance Mara seems to understand why the glitches matter, while a mysterious chip offers another piece of the puzzle. Nash must decide how much she can risk when even hesitation can be recorded.

Christoffer Vuolo Junros’s The Delay is superb science-fiction noir, with surveillance that feels invasive throughout Zendanabad. The suspense works since every technological detail can expose Nash, especially when scanners linger over borrowed names long enough for her to notice the system's thinking. The characterization is excellent, with supporting figures defined by particular behavior. Dar’el, a fellow prisoner who becomes Nash’s companion beyond the prison, brings dry humor through his banter with her. Mik’el, a member of Z’astra, the hidden community surviving beneath Zendanabad, brings humanity through the way he listens for changes in the tunnels that others miss. The science-fiction ideas feel native to this artificial world, as records rewrite themselves before service routes are read through pressure changes. The pacing maintains unease as surveillance extends through Zendanabad’s streets into checkpoints before reaching hidden infrastructure. This is the perfect read for science fiction noir lovers, and I'd give it a whole bucket of stars if I could. Very highly recommended.
