The Devil's Murder Game by Charles Horn is an action-packed, fast-paced crime narrative involving a clash between cult members and the Mafia. Hank Tower, a skilled private investigator with a baby on the way, is consulted by the NYPD to look into a murder and a strange mark left on the sole of the murdered man's shoe. A cult leader owes money but refuses to pay. A battle for power ensues, resulting in a cult member getting shot in an old restaurant by a likely Mafiosi. The cult then hangs a Mafiosi in the same restaurant. As Hank digs deeper for answers, his risk of being killed in the crossfire intensifies with every find. Meanwhile, he fights his attraction to his beautiful client, a woman seeking vengeance against the cult. Will Hank live long enough to see the birth of his child?
Charles weaves a large plot involving various characters whose viewpoints are depicted interchangeably. As we get a comprehensive, all-encompassing view of the plot and spontaneous killings, we also see each character's part play out in the story. Millicent is not involved in the killings but is stuck with a killer as her reluctant lover and seeking an escape, which brings her to seek help from the other side of the conflict. The book has similar dramatic complications, creating a seriously immersive, suspenseful read. Overall, I had a fantastic time reading the book but struggled with its quick pace in some areas. Fans of dark, character-rich crime stories with multiple twists will find The Devil's Murder Game deeply alluring and engaging. Charles's busy, chaotic plot keeps the reader guessing and expecting resolutions and answers.
