The Distance Between Us by A. C. Burch is an ingenious blend of mystery and humor. The main character is Helena. She is sociable, astute, and knowledgeable about painting. Despite being born male, she identifies as a woman and accepts herself. She also has glamorous experiences and great fortune. C.J., on the other hand, is a woman trying to rebuild her life in a place where she was barely known and needed to obtain a painting as a donation for her project. Unfortunately, C.J. dies in circumstances where it’s clear it wasn’t an accident, and Helena is unfairly accused. Now with the help of her family and friends, she has to solve a complex case to clear her name of the false accusation.
I found Helena to be a fearless character. She has a creative mind, adapts to any situation, and is not afraid to give honest feedback. No matter how complicated the problem is, she does her best. As the plot progresses, there is a second murder and more mysteries to solve, making the story more complex and interesting. A. C. Burch develops a variety of wonderful characters, but at times it feels like there are too many, which can complicate the reading. However, Helena's captivating personality justifies the diversity of people around her. To help with this, a list of characters before the story makes it easier to follow. In addition, throughout the narrative, we can learn a lot about them and their perspectives. Overall, The Distance Between Us is an intriguing, exciting, and fun book.
