The Division by Cristina Mia is a whimsical story that follows the animals of the Hargrave meadow, which has become a shadow of its former self. Once peaceful and vibrant, the meadow is now plagued by a mysterious fog that leads to conflict among the animals and a scarcity of resources, making life unbearable for them. Their leader, Baxter, a basset hound, and his council of foxes hold meetings that only exacerbate the problems, resulting in the unequal distribution of resources and escalating accusations that drive the animals further apart. Felix, a falcon, begins to question the orders of his commanders, who claim to be driving out insurgency groups who turn out to be strays merely trying to survive. After joining with unlikely allies, Felix uncovers the truth about the fog and devises a plan to expose the sinister intentions of the peacocks, who are behind the division and the scarcity of resources.
The Division addresses various societal issues, such as segregation, discrimination, propaganda, and the strategic disruption of unity. I was reminded of Animal Farm by George Orwell, which uses satire and allegory to explore political themes. Cristina Mia's storytelling resonates deeply with our generation, where individuals often blame one another for disunity, wars, environmental degradation, and depletion of natural resources, while in reality, it is powerful corporations and greedy political leaders benefiting from these conflicts. The book also touches on the role of military and police forces, whose original duty was to protect the interests of ordinary people but who now seem to follow orders that harm the vulnerable. It conveys a powerful message about how divisions are exploited by opportunistic individuals and emphasizes that history tends to repeat itself. Nevertheless, it encourages resilience and hope, reminding us that despite the fog of confusion obscuring our view, the truth is always present and awaiting discovery. This is a wonderful book filled with profound lessons and a diverse cast of characters. It is a must-read for anyone interested in social justice, political allegory, and stories that inspire hope amid turmoil.
