The Dream House by Tuula Pere is part of her Stories of India series. Father, Mother, and Samira have gone on their yearly holiday to Father's old home village. When Samira plants an idea in Father's mind, he gets excited and decides to build his own house, one they can stay in whenever they visit. Mother isn't so sure, and neither is Samira when they learn that the builder they hired is dishonest and has made off with all their money. Thankfully, they have good friends in the village, and they come to the rescue. But will Father get the house he dreamed of?
The Dream House by Tuula Pere is a wonderful story with hand-painted illustrations by Akanksha Priya that highlight the cultural aspect of the tale. While this is just a story on the face of it, it does have some important lessons for kids to learn. The first is never to place your faith and trust blindly in someone you don't know – it rarely pays off. Second, it teaches kids that it's fine to dream big, but sometimes you have to accept less than what you dreamed of; less is more most of the time, though, and something is always better than nothing. Tuula has created some lovely characters, and the other message in this book is that if you treat others with respect and kindness, they will repay you in the same way. It doesn't matter what nationality you are; most people will be able to relate in some way to the three main characters. Another lovely story by this author and I highly recommend it to all kids for a fun and educational read.
