The Drinker of Suffering by AMF begins with an interesting introduction — that the manuscript for the novel was discovered by a book collector. Although the purported author, Arthur Michael Ford, was neither located nor verified, the text contained a variety of plausible truths that called into question whether or not this was a true story. The text itself focuses on the disappearance of Ford’s Uncle Levi, who had left behind the God Box, a box with papers and notes on various religions, conspiracies, military reports, and case studies on a hallucinogen known as Dimethyltryptamine, as well as a warning stating that once you open the box there is no turning back. Is it fact? Is it fiction? A strange mix of both? That’s up to you to decide for yourself.

Not only was I drawn into The Drinker of Suffering due to the mystery surrounding its origins, but I was also curious about the implications of the God Box and the enigmatic characters involved. You will find yourself racing through this book, unable to set it down until you find the answers that you so badly desire. Although the influx of information can be somewhat overwhelming, the author prevents readers from getting lost with well written prose that offers clear descriptions of both people and places. In addition, the story is written in first person, which allows readers to get inside the mind of the narrator as you seek to understand the implications of the God Box, what had happened to Uncle Levi, and what exactly it all means.

The Drinker of Suffering

This story really sucks you in. It is both a mystery and religous quest for the truth that lies in all of us. I found myslef thinking deeply about the choices each of us makes in how we react to others misfortunes and how hate itself fuels the evils that exist in the world. I look forward to reading more from this author, whoever A.M.F. really is.
