The Duchess and the Accidental Thief: Her Violet Empire #1 by Scott A Clark is a heist action novel with elaborate schemes and interesting characters. The Duchess, Francesca Nichols, and Mr. Jameson Owen have a vendetta against each other, both trying to pull one over on the other. Francesca hires Martin as a Cloud Solutions Architect and gives him carte blanche to hire his team and figure out a way to complete the task set by her. Martin creates a plan to use data security to their advantage and, along with his team including an accountant, two thieves, a salesperson, and an office executive, forms a plan to take down Owen. Will everything go to plan? Will all the pieces fall into place like a game of Tetris or could things go awry?
Scott A Clark's The Duchess and the Accidental Thief offers the reader a narrative that kept me engaged from the very first page. The various characters in the plot, from the mysterious Duchess to the nerdy Martin and even the quirky thieves Duncan and Tracy, all have their own set of well-developed characteristics. The story is narrated from multiple perspectives and so the reader gets an overview of the plot from various angles. There are definite elements of intrigue blended with bits of humor and action, with a side serving of romance. I loved how the various people in the team worked to complete the task and how the author maintained a sense of levity even during the action moments in the narrative.
