The Duke’s Magnificent Bastard by Sandra Masters is a spellbinding historical novel that features interesting characters and a gripping plot. Meet Thorn Wick, the bastard son of a duke, who is doing everything to win his father’s good graces by working hard to achieve recognition as a respectable golden horse trainer. But then when things seem to be going better for him, Alicia Montgomery, the duke’s ward, comes into the picture, a woman who is madly in love with Thorn. She believes she can seduce the duke’s son to get him to love her. While on a mission to Barbados, a mission sanctioned by his father, Thorn learns dark secrets about his past and what happened to his mother. Now he has to choose whether to get revenge for his mother or to allow his heart to be tempered by Alicia’s passionate love. The reader will have to turn those pages to discover the twists and exciting detours in this gripping story.
Sandra Masters has created a story and a setting that will transport readers to exciting places. Thorn Wick is a character that I enjoyed a lot and it was fun navigating the complex world of his heart and feeling the pain he carries within him by being a bastard son. The writing is beautiful and reads with an unusual fluidity. The setting is beautifully captured, thanks to the author’s masterful use of descriptive prose. The dialogues are well-crafted and they have a lot of depth with great realism injected into them. The Duke’s Magnificent Bastard is a delightful story with characters that will stay with readers for long; it is entertaining, well-paced, and designed to keep readers turning the pages.
