The Dust: Book II: Pursuit by David H. Sharp picks up right where The Dust: Book I: Bloodlust leaves off. This episode of the series is every bit as captivating as was the first book, and I’ll be mighty surprised if Book III isn’t also as well done. In Pursuit, we pick up with Amber, Jake’s daughter, in the attic with her grandmother, while grandpa has become one of the infected, and is trying to figure out how to reach them both so he can eat them. Jake, meanwhile, is still travelling with his intrepid band of survivors, slowly getting closer to where Amber is. Along the way, they encounter the infected at every turn, and learn they are closely followed by Lonny Gold and his two miscreants, still lugging their human cargo in search of Angel and Lou. They also pick up another survivor, who looks, acts, and fights like an old time Knight in Shining Armor. Each chapter describes another perilous adventure for our heroes, or another unspeakable atrocity by Lonny and company. However, toward the end of this episode, a new enemy is discovered, and these guys are well armed.

The Dust: Book II: Pursuit is very well written, although there are a number of minor typos which can distract Grammar Nazis like myself. All in all, though, the book is gut wrenching throughout, and should be required reading for people who believe “there’s some good in everybody” because some of these characters wouldn’t know “good” if it slapped them in the face. Speaking of characters, Sharp has done a superb job of developing his characters. There is no doubt as to who you will hate, and who you will root for. I strongly urge fans of Apocalyptic scenarios to get and read both of these books as soon as possible. There will be times when you wish you could reach into your e-reader or real book, and throttle a couple of the characters. Other times you will wish you could just hold one of the characters, to provide a modicum of comfort. The Dust series is definitely a must-read series of apocalyptic delight.
