The Eagle with a Lazy Eye by A.M. Vela was an eye-opener for me. The story is about a bald eagle named Piko. Piko has trouble seeing things because he has a lazy eye. Piko must wear a patch on his eye in order to correct his vision. Eventually Piko gets his eye patch removed and is able to have eagle eye vision.

I grabbed The Eagle with a Lazy Eye as soon as I saw it because my daughter will be going through the same thing Piko did. Just like Piko, she too has a lazy eye and is going to have to wear a patch. I love that Vela wrote a story that can help prepare her for when she has to wear the patch. The story was also educational for me, since I did not know how the patch actually worked. My daughter’s opinion was that she liked that Piko was wearing a patch because he looked like a pirate.

The illustrations were very eye catching and it was nice to see what an eagle sees during flight. I enjoyed the eagle facts at the back of the book as well as the definition of what a lazy eye really is. I will be reading this story again and again with my daughter to get her prepared for her eye patch. This is the second book I have read of Vela’s. Vela has a knack of writing stories that children can identify with. I cannot wait to see what Vela comes up with next. My daughter is quickly becoming a fan of Vela’s works.
