A curmudgeon beats a full-house in Ma’s rules of Cajun poker, though Major Brad Stout, a US Army expert in radiation defense and eBay detective, isn’t certain why in The eBay Guardian by Charles A. Salter. Equally enigmatic as Ma’s rules of Cajun poker is the death of a woman from a radiation overdose through a horrible mistake at the hospital. Then a chemist working with a vat of plutonium dies from a pulse of neutron radiation while attempting an experiment. Added to this is the emergence of another curmudgeon which is as puzzling as the card game. As the military’s premier radiation defense lab and eBay detective begins to look into the mysterious chain of events, he comes across an eBay tracker who calls himself Curmudgeon Lee. The problem Brad faces is whether or not to count Curmudgeon Lee as a friend or an enemy. Forced to trust the mysterious figure, Brad and the Curmudgeon work together to uncover an assassination plot meant to take out a government official in a fake hospital accident. The biggest challenge is figuring out who, when, and where. There is a twist, however, in that unraveling this plot relates back to the secrets of the WWII diary from previous books of the trilogy.
The eBay Guardian is a stunning and breathtaking conclusion to the eBay Detective Trilogy. With plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader turning pages, Salter expertly weaves a tight plot of suspense and mystery. Profound, realistic, and brilliantly written; The eBay Guardian is a superb conclusion to a trilogy that is just a little bit too realistic for comfort.
