In The Emotional Cost of Clarity, Shante Alexander takes a close look at how many people earn a reputation for reliability through a life of service to others while leaving themselves out of the equation. Over time, that habit of jumping to help slowly gets taken for granted. Alexander explains that early approval related to performance often extends into adulthood and shapes how people respond to requests, even when they feel totally drained. As their awareness develops, a person begins asking honest questions about why their personal needs are pushed to the back burner. The book follows that moment of recognition as individuals reconsider the expectations placed on their time, their energy, and their identity. Through discussions of boundaries, respect, and emotional availability, Alexander explains how a stronger awareness will better guide people's decisions about connections while keeping their dignity and respect in relationships.

Shante Alexander's The Emotional Cost of Clarity is a guide that examines what happens after someone steps away from familiar roles and begins building a life directed by personal values. This book is really important, especially now, when many adults reach a moment when expectations from families or workplaces no longer match the life they want to live. Alexander spends time on this, encouraging us to decide for ourselves what daily life looks like next. Her writing style is conversational, and she provides tools that can be used easily in everyday life. I love her Three-R's process, which guides readers through recognizing the pull to return to a draining relationship and choosing to turn their attention toward a healthier connection. The author has an extensive resume with years of coaching and a solid background in the study of relational behavior and identity. She backs up all her explanations with observations drawn from real people. Readers moving through midlife transitions or reconsidering long relationships will find everything they need in this brilliant guide. Very highly recommended.
