"The Faberge Secret" by Stephanie Burkhart was a fabulous read. As the story unfolded with intrigue, Russians, and international travel, I could hardly wait to turn each page. And the intimate scenes were, let’s just say, very passionate!
The story unfolds with mousy Elise, a small antiques dealer and museum owner accidentally knocking over a Russian businessman, Dimitri, on her way to an auction at Sotheby’s. Little did she know how their lives were going to be forever intertwined. Outside of the auction house, she buys a jeweled egg from a greasy man selling items out of his van. How was she to know it was a million dollar Faberge egg? After her friend is tied up and their hotel room ransacked, Elise learns the secret of the Faberge egg and realizes that the mysterious Russian businessman she knocked over is the rightful owner of the precious ornament. Dimitri’s arch enemy takes drastic measures, following Elise, and killing two of his own men in an effort to get the egg back. Dimitri and Elise fall in love hesitantly as they have both experienced prior bad relationships, but she follows him to Russia to try to help the police capture Kelch, Dimitri’s rival.
Fabulously written, the story combines elements of mystery, action, love, and tender family moments all at the right places, making a perfect fit. If you want a good story combining history, crime, and passion, "The Faberge Secret" is the book for you. Having visited St. Petersburg, Russia, and Brattleboro, Vermont, I enjoyed the memories of those cities that this book evoked.
