The Falls of Us: A Compilation of Short Stories by E.M. Fowler explores society’s underlying issues and what comes after a painful experience. A religious woman is adamant that she murdered her husband despite evidence contradicting her claims. A vindictive ex-wife plays puppet master to a daughter and her father, severing their bond with a quiet satisfaction. A scorned lover tries to cover the stain of infidelity even as things come crashing down around her. A miraculous event, caused by a reckless driver, creates a believer. Imagine being handed down a sentence for forgetting to say, “Yes, Ma’am.” These stories and more in The Falls of Us embark on a journey of truth and education as they delve into societal expectations, manipulation, and divine intervention.

Thought-provoking and inspirational, The Falls of Us studies human nature, our choices, and how we deal with them in the aftermath. Expiate delves into common courtesy and the faux pas we commit, sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. But because things like mental disabilities or a stilted thought process exist, social cues shouldn’t determine a person’s worth. The silent manipulation in The Blue Curtains and its unexpected plot twist made me gasp. The Curse of Eve explores a society where being a woman means keeping silent, and speaking out means permanent silence; something not so different from our own reality. Each story has a meaningful message and invites readers to pause. Offering food for thought, The Falls of Us is a book you don’t want to miss!
