The Fantastic Travels of William and the Monarch Butterfly: Fly, Fly Away on the Wings of a Monarch Butterfly by Christina Steiner is a great book that teaches children and adults how to respect butterflies and other insects. This book also teaches them about butterflies, friendship and death. The story follows William and Anka the butterfly he caught. Anka shows William her world after convincing him to set her free.

I chose to read The Fantastic Travels of William and the Monarch Butterfly because my daughter loves butterflies. I did not realize when I chose this book how much I would learn about Monarch butterflies as well. Steiner has done a terrific job in filling this book with facts about the lives and travels of Monarch butterflies. I never realized where or how far butterflies travel. I liked how the book is written for children, but is told in a way that it teaches adults as well. I admit the book did make me tear up, but there is no easy way to talk about death. William and Anka’s friendship truly touched my heart.

I really enjoyed The Fantastic Travels of William and the Monarch Butterfly and my daughter loved the colorful pictures. It was nice to see the world through a butterfly’s eyes. I hope that this book encourages children and adults to stop trying to catch butterflies as well as other insects. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about nature. I hope that Steiner can write a similar book on lightning bugs/fireflies, which is another insect that deserves more respect.
