What do you do when the things that go bump in your dreams take form during waking hours? A normal person would attempt to run away as far and as fast as they could. But if you’re sisters Mia and Jamie, you live through it upon the inheritance of a dead family member’s home. That is when the creep factor of The Fear starts to pull you in and make you check over your shoulder as you dig deeper into Rae Louise’s chilling psychological thriller. This is one of those stories where it is really hard to tell you what the story is about without giving away the whole plot. Let’s just say that a lot of weird and totally creepy things happen when they all get to the house and only the little girl, Louisa, knows something the grown ups do not.
When I first started reading The Fear, I was ready for this to be a pseudo-scary version of every haunted house horror show ever written or acted. But I can honestly say that nothing has left me as on edge as this story since I was young enough to be truly terrified. The other thing that Rae Louise did in a very satisfying way was ramp up the mystery along with the terror for a truly gripping read that renewed my love for this genre. This is not a read for the squeamish or for the occasional reader, because The Fear requires your full attention lest you miss important details and things guarantee to terrify you. All round, a satisfying read that just might require a night light.
