The Feathers Flew is a short dramatic story about a man who has been pushed to the edge. The working man does not have it easy, having to pay taxes, deal with the reality of life, work to make ends meet, and take care of their family. Robert E. Kearns demonstrates the realization of what terrible damage alcohol and bad relationships can do to your well-being. Paddy is a victim of the rat race, being stuck in a world where the corporate giants have control of their underlings. Paddy wants to break free but is stuck and cannot get out. This story shows readers how you need to be careful who your friends are as they may influence how your family views you.

The Feathers Flew is a great short story that shows the darkness of human nature and how man fights against the forces that life brings. Robert E. Kearns paints a picture of what damage being drunk can do to those around you, as well as to yourself. It was interesting to see Paddy's behavior, as that is what happens in real life. It was intriguing to see how the people you hang out with can positively and negatively influence you, as well as your inner demons manifesting because of intoxication. Paddy's kids react realistically to his behavior, which will make readers want to turn against him. The dark twist at the end of the story is unexpected, leaving you to wonder what happens next.
