The Fin-Tastic Rescue by Laura Mancuso is the story of three young mermaids named Sara, Alix, and Lucy who find a sea turtle needing help. They quickly realize he is cold-stunned and rush to offer their assistance. Lucy goes to the surface and gets her land friend, Beth, to help them. Beth has friends from the Marine Animal Rescue who come to Tony the Turtle’s rescue. Sara decides they need to start an animal rescue committee for marine animals with the partnership of their friends Beth and the Marine Animal Rescue Team. Their Fin-Tastic Rescue Team is started, and the three mermaids begin rescuing other ocean creatures like Fifi the Flamingo, Dottie the Dolphin, and Marty the Manatee.
Illustrator Jenna Guidi’s artwork draws readers' eyes to the spectacular and wonderful underwater world. Laura Mancuso does a creative job of explaining about marine animals and the dangers they face from humans, while simultaneously bringing awareness and education to how humans are harming the oceans. The message in The Fin-Tastic Rescue is that humans and sea creatures need to work together to live a harmonious sea life. Respect and preservation are crucial for protecting marine waters and sea creatures. I especially found the glossary section very educational, and I never even knew that sea turtles experience cold-stunning, a new term I learned. This riveting book entertains and educates young children about preserving and protecting our oceans.
