The Final Storm by M. A. Thorne is a story about hope, second chances, and moving forward. Depressed and desolate, Joe hates his job at the toilet paper factory, and he hates his life even more. Looking forward to a pint at The Black Dog with nothing but his thoughts for company has become part of his daily routine. But then he meets Fred, or the ghost of Fred, rather. Having suffered an untimely death, Fred’s spirit is in a state of unrest, and he needs Joe to go back to the moment he died to rectify it. Joe, however, is a self-loathing mess and nowhere near confident he can pull it off. But as he delves deeper into Fred’s life, Joe realises that with enough determination and confidence, he can help two lost souls. Ultimately, Joe realizes that he won't just be doing this for Fred, but for himself. But when Joe’s nagging doubts start rearing their ugly heads again, it's back to The Black Dog. Did Fred, lost in a colossal storm of his own, make a grave mistake in trusting Joe?
Comedic in tone, The Final Storm had me rolling on the floor with laughter, providing a startling contrast to Joe’s troubles and toxic habits. Joe’s self-reflection is a great turning point for his character development. I like that M. A. Thorne created all these different themes and expertly wove them into the plot with good writing. I also liked the internal conversations Joe had with himself; they were hilarious and very entertaining. At first, Fred, self-assured and well-organized, seemed so different from Joe, but as I read further, I saw a likeness in them, both possessing admirable determination. Fans of the paranormal will love this read, as there are so many lessons to learn. A paranormal story with a romantic twist, The Final Storm delivers a suspenseful and enticing drama.
